INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis judge has ruled that a trucker charged in an accident on I 465 that left a mother and her young daughters dead is competent to stand trial.
In making her decision, Marion County Criminal Court Judge Barbara Crawford also set a January 11, 2020 trial date for Bruce Pollard.
Pollard's attorney, Jack Crawford, asked for a psychiatric evaluation of his client. Based on the results of that report, Pollard was ruled competent to stand trial.
The truck driver was initially charged in July with three counts of Reckless Homicide as well as Reckless Operation of a Vehicle in a Highway Work Zone. Later, prosecutors filed seven additional Reckless Driving charges.
Alanna Koons and her twin 18-month-old daughters died in the July 14 accident in a construction zone on I 465 on the Indianapolis north side. A semi with Pollard at the wheel hit them from behind. Seven people in other vehicles were injured in the fiery crash.
