INDIANAPOLIS--A man and woman are dead and a third person was seriously hurt, following an overnight crash on the Indianapolis west side.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, a police supervisor in an unmarked car was passed on Lafayette Road by a Ford Mustang traveling at an estimated speed of 80 miles-per-hour. As the officer attempted to pull over the car near West 34th Street and Lafayette Road, the Mustang took off on westbound 34th Street and the officer gave chase, again at very high speeds.

But, police say the officer stopped chasing the vehicle "due to the threat to public safety." About one mile from where the chase was terminated, the officer came up the crash site. The car had run into a tree in the 6300 block of West 34th.

The two people who were dead at the scene are identified as 20-year-old Luis Perez and 27-year-old Joan Diaz.
