Two found dead after fire in rural Carroll County

CARROLL COUNTY — Two people were found dead after a house fire in rural Carroll County on Monday.

According to a report from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, emergency crews and firefighters were called to a house fire at a house in the 2700 block of South State Road 29. The house is located approximately one mile north of Burlington.

Passersby called 911 and reported seeing smoke coming from the house. Some of the passersby also stopped to see if anyone was still in the house and found an unconscious adult female in the house prior to the arrival of fire units.

Deputies said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene by the Carroll County coroner.

After firefighters were able to take control of the fire, the body of an adult male was found in the remnants of the house. The man was also pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff's office said the identities of the victims is being withheld pending additional investigation and the notification of family.

Deputies said a dog inside the house also died from the fire.

Investigators said the cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Carroll County Sheriff's Office and the Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office.
