TIPPECANOE COUNTY — Two teens were killed and a third was critically injured in a crash early Wednesday morning.
Tippecanoe County Sheriff Goldsmith said the crash happened in the 6800 block of County Road 100 North around 8 a.m. and appears to have been a single-vehicle accident.
Two teen boys inside the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Tippecanoe County Coroner Donna Avolt.
A third boy was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
According to a report from the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office, the investigation and witness statements indicate the vehicle, a black 2011 Nissan Altima, was traveling east on County Road 100 North at a high rate of speed. Witnesses told deputies the vehicle lost control after cresting a hill and drove off the left side of the roadway and into a tree.
Deputies said alcohol and drugs are not suspected of being a factor in the crash.
The two teens killed at the scene have been identified as Dalton Kendall, 17, and Kyle Richardson, 16.
The third teen remains in critical condition at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
All three are students at Harrison High School in West Lafayette.
Harrison High School Principal Cory Marshall released the following statement:
"We are heartbroken and saddened to hear about the crash that involved three Harrison students. On behalf of the school, we send our deepest condolences to the families involved. The TSC has deployed additional counselors to the schools impacted to help meet the emotional needs of our staff and students. We ask that the community keep the families, staff, and students in its thoughts and prayers."
