INDIANAPOLIS -- Two Indiana students made it to the top 17 in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, but they won't be advancing any further.

Nicholas Ivan, 13, is an 8th Grader from Carmel, Indiana and Jashun Paluru, 12, is a 7th grader at Battle Ground Middle School in West Lafayette. They are the only two Indiana students who survived Wednesday's competition.

They both were knocked out of the top 17 on Thursday.

There were initially 13 students from Indiana competing in the competition.

The 40 finalists come from 20 states, one Canadian province, and one other foreign country.

Indiana is one of six states to have two finalists in moving forward.

North Carolina had three students, Texas has six students, and California has seven students who were named finalists.
