Lawrence police roll out body camera pilot program

Posted

LAWRENCE, Ind. -- Two Lawrence police officers will start wearing body cameras next week as part of a pilot program introduced on Friday.

Police say they hope to gain feedback from the program over the next several weeks and an additional 42 officers should be equipped with body cameras by October.

The cameras will have unlimited storage on a cloud system for audio and video.

Police say the new system will make body cameras plus in-car video available as well.

The cameras will cost the department about $60,000 per year.

Money for this year’s equipment will be supplied from existing funds in the city’s public safety budget.

Additional funding is proposed in the 2017 budget.
