MUNCIE—Muncie police are working to figure out why two teenagers did not hear or see a freight train at a south side crossing there, Wednesday morning.

A 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man were hit by the train at West 23rd and Liberty Street just before 6:30 a.m.

They were walking in the area, according to police.

The girl suffered serious head injuries and was flown to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

The 18-year-old was not seriously hurt.

A number of train tracks crisscross Muncie, and accidents are not uncommon.
