SHERIDAN, Ind. -- A vandalism suspect was jailed for resisting arrest on Thursday in Sheridan.
In September 2014, Sheridan police began looking into a series of vandalism cases, three of which were directly connected to arson.
In all of the cases, the word "HEX" was spray-painted on homes, fences or vehicles.
On July 5, 2016, a police officer on patrol saw "HEX" painted on a garage near the 400 block of S. California St.
The officer spotted a man in the area carrying a flashlight. The man ran and the officer took off after him.
Police say Jerry Coy, 65, of Sheridan, tried to resist arrest and hit the officer in the back of the head with a hammer wrapped in a plastic bag.
Coy was tased by the officer and arrested. He was checked at the scene for injuries and released to police.
The officer was treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries.
Police say Coy had spray paint, matches and gasoline with him when he was arrested.
He's being held in the Hamilton County Jail on $100,000 bond charged with aggravated battery, attempted aggravated battery, battery resulting in injury to a public safety officer, resisting law enforcement and criminal mischief.
The charges are related only to the July 5 incident. The investigation of the other cases of vandalism is ongoing.
