Veterans foundation looking for bikes for vets

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- A non-profit is asking you to step in to help the men and women who've put their lives on the line for our freedom.

The goal is to help homeless veterans get back on their feet through the use of two wheels.

Michael Buchanan is filling bags in the food pantry at the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation. The retired Army corporal takes pride in helping fellow veterans, some who have hit rock bottom. Not too long ago, he was in their shoes.

"I've been beaten up pretty bad, and now I'm better," Buchanan said.

Buchanan hit the lowest point in his life in 2007. Up until recently, transportation has been a barrier on the road to recovery.

"If the bus line stops at X, and I need to go to Y, Z, I couldn't go," he said. "If it was a mile or two after the bus stop, I wouldn't be able to go."

Buchanan reached out to the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation for help. One month ago, his progress accelerated. The foundation gave him a bike – something he says opened up his world.

"I'm looking for employment at the VA, and this bicycle is helping me to be there," he said. "I'll be able to be there on time, every day. Before I got this bicycle, I was always sitting in my apartment, You get used to that. You don't realize that you get depressed. You get to get out, see the world. It's a good thing."

HVAF is looking for 50 new or gently used bikes in good condition. The organization doesn't have spare parts, or the ability to make repairs. If you're interested in donating, contact them at 317-951-0688.
