20 Indianapolis homes will be getting a mini-makeover through Cicoa’s 6th annual Safe at Home project.
Volunteers will be helping more than the seniors who live there to stay safe, they’re also hoping to save area neighborhoods, one home at a time.
One of the homes belongs to Marie and Charles Thrasher. The couple has called Kinnear Ave. on the city’s northeast side home for years. But, like in many neighborhoods, they have fewer neighbors these days.
Families are gone, seniors have moved out and homes are boarded up.
"There's one family, the older lady was real sickly and they needed a lot of help and she eventually moved out of town with a relative so she could get the proper help she needed because she just couldn't do it all,” Marie Thrasher said.
The Thrasher’s are facing similar health issues.
“His kidneys are failing, he's at 30% and he has a defibrillator,” Marie Thrasher.
This Saturday, volunteers through Cicoa will install guard rails, grab bars and fix the stair rail for the Thrasher’s for free.
“If folks are willing to have us come in and we'll work with them, identify some of their needs to address some of the fall issues that might happen in their home,” Cicoa CEO Orion Bell said.
Thanks to the help, Marie and Charlies, along with three neighbors on their street, won’t be moving out anytime soon.
