INDIANAPOLIS – A Chesterton, Ind., native was killed in a training mission in Texas as he worked on his West Point cadet training. A childhood friend shares her mourning process.
West Point Cadet Mitchell A. Winey, 21, was one of the nine soldiers who died in a training accident near Fort Hood when a vehicle overturned into flood waters.

Kristin Mabry knew Winey from childhood, growing up with him in Chesterton.
She says they stayed friends the next 16 years – up until he died in Texas. She also says she’s heartbroken, and Winey was destined to do great things.
