U.S. Senate candidates Todd Young and Evan Bayh square off in only debate

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Democratic former Sen. Evan Bayh and Republican Rep. Todd Young clashed over the future of President Barack Obama's health care law early in the Indiana U.S. Senate debate Tuesday.

Young criticized Bayh during Tuesday's debate for voting in favor of the health care overhaul before he left the Senate in 2010.

Bayh countered that he wants to fix parts of the law and not allow insurance companies freedom to cancel policies as before the overhaul was adopted.

Bayh also said that he was proud to work with Republican former Sen. Richard Lugar to support the 2008 auto bailout that rescued carmakers General Motors and Chrysler. Bayh criticized Young for campaigning against a program he says saved thousands of Indiana jobs.

The campaign to replace retiring Republican Sen. Dan Coats has become a key one as the GOP looks to retain its narrow Senate majority.
