RICHMOND, Indiana — Two people are dead and several others were treated for minor injuries after a fire broke out at a Wayne County apartment complex Monday afternoon.

Richmond Fire Department Chief Jerry Purcell said crews were called to the Interfaith Apartments on W. Main street just before 5 p.m. for a working structure fire.

When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the fifth floor of the building. All apartments on the fifth and sixth floors were evacuated during the fire and four residents and two firefighters were taken to the Reid Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

After putting out the fire, firefighters recovered the bodies of two people from inside the apartment where the fire began. Their identities have not been released at this time.

Fire officials say roughly 40 people were evacuated from the apartments and Red Cross has been called into help them find shelter while the extent of the damage is determined.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and remains under investigation.
