WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Aron Thompson, a sergeant in the West Lafayette Police Department, has been in the hospital for weeks, battling a rare form of cancer.
Thompson is a husband and father of two. He's a combat veteran who currently works to protect and serve the people of West Lafayette. His life has been disrupted by his diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia.
To help him, his fellow officers shaved their heads and held a blood drive. "Aron Strong" is on their wrists, cars and hearts.
Lt. Art Choate, Thompson's brother-in-law, works with Thompson at the police department.
"I think [the support] is incredible for him," Choate said.
Thompson agrees, with tears in his eyes and a tremble in his voice.
"Just the amount of support from everybody," Thompson said. "People that I've never met, people from all over, all walks of life, everybody has been wanting to help and it's been amazing."
In the moments in the hospital where he feels OK, Thompson spends time with his children.
"I'd rather it be me than my kids or my wife," he said. "It's just a bump in the road. We'll get through it."
