What is the "Raise the Bar" campaign?

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- If you see a "Raise the Bar" on the doors and windows of your favorite bar, you need to know what the campaign is, and how it works.

Experts from a domestic and sexual violence program, called "Alternatives," are reaching out to establishments that sell alcohol and offering bystander intervention training.

The experts visit a bar meet the staff and explain what leads up to abuse and sexual assault, pointing out the areas that could be dangerous.

They also share what bar owners can do to lower the threat.

"People are adults and they are making their own decisions but when someone's feeding them drinks or doing things like that to try and bring down their defenses so that they can be more acceptable to victimization," said Ashley Waterbury-Carpenter, the resource development manager of Alternatives. "That's where we as community members have the right and should step in and intervene and help look out for our fellow community members."

So far, three bars have finished the training. The bars are in Anderson and McCordsville. Next, Alternatives is planning training at Ball State's campus.
