Woman, 90, dies in near-east side fire

INDIANAPOLIS -- A 90-year-old woman was killed Friday in a fire at her near-east side home.

The fire began around 1:40 p.m. at a home near the intersection of Parkview Avenue and Ohio Street.

Firefighters arrived to find a 68-year-old woman who lived at the house had already walked out on her own. She was taken Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.

A 90-year-old woman was found inside the house. The Indianapolis Fire Department reported shortly before 11 p.m. that she had succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire.

Neighbors told police the women are mother and daughter.

Four cats also died in the fire. Two others were found alive and given oxygen by firefighters.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated.

IFD said the death was the first in its service area in 2016.
