Pregnant woman, unborn child die in crash

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- A pregnant woman was killed in a crash on the city's west side Friday.

The crash happened near 16th Street and Medford Avenue when a car and van collided just after 8:30 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found a woman in a white van who was unresponsive. She was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. She later died at the hospital. Authorities told RTV6 she was nine months pregnant.

The victim was identified Friday afternoon as 34-year-old Lourdes Cortes. The Marion County Coroner's Office said Cortes' unborn child also died in the crash.

Police say the van was pulling off of Medford onto 16th Street and collided with a car headed eastbound on 16th Street. The airbags in the car deployed. The two men in the car were not hurt. The collision pushed the van several blocks.

Crash investigators spent hours taking measurements to figure out how it happened.

"The white van was coming off of Medford to, we believe, go eastbound and may have come out too far. A second vehicle was traveling eastbound on 16th Street. They collided," Sgt. Kendale Adams said.
