INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman who crashed her car into an in-ground pool last week on the city's east side has died.
The crash happened just after 8 p.m. Thursday in the 8500 block of East 16th Street, just west of the intersection of 16th Street and Post Road.
Juan Zepeda told firefighters he and his four children were home watching TV when they heard a car strike the residence. He then looked out the window to see the car travel across the front of his house, through his fence and into his in-ground pool.
Bystanders ran to the house and jumped into the water to try to remove the female driver from the vehicle.
Five IMPD officers and an Indianapolis firefighter joined the bystanders in the pool, taking turns going under water to try to break a window or get the door open.
Responders were eventually able to free the woman, Shainne Gaither, and she was rushed to Community Hospital East in critical condition. The Marion County Coroner said Tuesday that she had succumbed to her injuries.
A cause for the crash has not yet been released.
