INDIANAPOLIS — A woman and a dog were killed in a house fire on Indianapolis' east side early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 1900 block of Kildare Avenue around 6 a.m. after a neighbor reported hearing an explosion and fire from next door.

Crews arrived to find the house on fire and quickly put out the flames.

Inside the home, firefighters found the body of a woman in her 60s. Her identity has not been released.

Indianapolis Fire Department PIO Rita Reith said Wednesday's fatality is the first fire fatality in Indianapolis for 2020.

Firefighters say a dog also died in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by IMPD and IFD.
