INDIANAPOLIS -- A 74-year-old woman was critically injured and family of eight left homeless following a house fire Friday afternoon on the city's west side.

Several fire departments responded to the fire around 12:30 p.m. at 3614 W. Vermont St.

Extra crews were brought in to help fight the fire because of the heat and humidity.

The homeowners and their six kids, ages 14 to 7, were not home when the fire broke out.

They have lived in the house for six years and have no insurance.

Firefighters were able to save the family dog.

The house did have working smoke detectors. Investigators still don't know what started the fire.

Damage is estimated at $110,000.
