LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A Lafayette woman claimed a dependent that never existed and lied about the custody of another, allowing her to collect more on welfare, according to WLFI in Lafayette.

Amanda Brummett, 33, claimed a son and daughter in reports to the Tippecanoe County Division of Family Resources, according to court documents reviewed by WLFI.

Investigators learned Brummett did not have custody of her son, and there was no record of any daughter.

Tippecanoe County prosecutors said the fraudulent claims allowed Brummett to collect nearly $12,000 in welfare payments and more than $10,000 in SNAP benefits between September 2012 and April 2016.

Brummett has been charged with three counts of welfare fraud.
