CARMEL, Ind. -- Bids will go out in July for work to widen the Monon Greenway through Midtown and the Arts & Design District in Carmel.
The 12-foot wide path will be transformed into a 140-foot wide right-of-way that will include new dedicated lanes for cycling, sidewalks, green spaces, one-way streets with additional parking and a new Midtown Plaza at 4th Street SW near the Allied Solutions corporate headquarters.
The work will be broken into three phases, according to Melanie Lentz, project manager:
- Phase 1 - Construction of the 2 new Monon Blvd. roads – one northbound and one southbound on either side of the existing trail. During this time, the trail will remain open.
- Phase 1-B – With the new roads built, Monon Trail pedestrian traffic will be shifted onto one of the new roads. The existing trail will then be demolished and construction will begin on the new median and multi-use paths. This phase of the project is expected to take place this fall.
- Phase 2 – Construction of everything south of 4th Street to City Center Drive. This includes the wider trail and any other features. This is a 2018 project.
The widening of the Monon should take about 12 months to complete at a cost of at least $20 million which will come from a variety of sources including bonds and developer commitments.
