LAWRENCE — A man turned the situation around when another man jumped into his vehicle and tried to rob him at gunpoint Thursday morning, police said.
According to Lawrence police the victim was sitting in his vehicle in the 4200 block of North Franklin Avenue around 8:30 a.m. Thursday when another man jumped into his car and pointed a gun at him, demanding cash.
The victim told the thief he didn’t have any money and took off, attempting to drive toward an armored truck that was nearby. During the attempted escape, the two men got into a struggle over the suspect’s gun and the victim crashed his vehicle through a fence.
Police say the victim was able to jump out of the car and pull out a gun on the suspect, firing at him. The suspect returned fire, striking the victim in the arm.
The suspect was shot an unknown amount of times.
Officers in the area heard the exchange of gunfire and rushed to the scene. The suspect and victim were both taken to the hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds.
The suspect is expected to be charged after he’s released from the hospital.
No names have been released at this time.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Lawrence Police Department.
