INDIANAPOLIS — A Wayne Township Fire Department crew stopped a potentially dangerous accident from occurring on the city's west side Monday afternoon.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were attempting to stop a driver who was drifting off and on Girl School Road, near Ben Davis High School, just before 2 p.m., according to Wayne Township Fire Captain, Michael Pruitt.

The Wayne Township fire crew had been on their way to training when they recognized they needed to stop the vehicle before the individual struck another car or even a pedestrian. The team parked the fire engine in the driver's path and took a low speed hit to bring the vehicle to a complete stop.

Firefighters and IMPD determined the driver of the vehicle was having a medical emergency and rendered care. The driver is expected to be OK, and damage was minimal to both vehicles.

"These are the moments you won’t find a policy for in our manual." Wayne Township Fire Captain, Michael Pruitt, said. "But there is such a thing as doing the right thing at the right time for the right reason."
