HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — One teenager was killed and another was critically injured when a Florida man opened fire on the suspects during a home invasion, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said the teens kicked in a screen porch of an apartment in the 1200 block of Citrus Falls Circle and entered through an unlocked door, one armed. A man and his fiancée lived in the apartment, and investigators said the man got his own gun and fired shots.

Investigators say both suspects were shot. One teen died and another was in critical condition. The residents were not hurt.

Deputies said they also conducted a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle in the area, where they encountered two more teens believe involved in the home invasion. Investigators said all teens involved are 16 to 17 years old and are believed to attend Gaither High School.

"This is not a random act. This couple that lived in that apartment were targeted for unknown reasons at this point that we're having to work through with some interviews. The couple that resided there are cooperating with us, fully cooperate and given statements to detectives," said Major Frank Losat.

Investigators said the resident legally owned his firearm.
