STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Authorities say the 3-year-old son of a Steamboat Springs police officer is dead after he accidentally shot himself at the family's home.

Steamboat Today reports (http://goo.gl/foVFzU ) the boy, whose name hasn't been released, was with his parents at their home in the Stagecoach area when he was shot Thursday morning. The boy's father and a friend drove him toward Steamboat Springs and were met on the way by paramedics, who took the boy to the hospital.

Routt County Undersheriff Ray Birch declined to say if the boy was alone when he was shot or what kind of gun was involved. Birch also would not say whether the boy was shot with a gun issued by the police department.

The sheriff's office is investigating and has called the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to help.
