WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump will present the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former Notre Dame head football coach Lou Holtz on Thursday.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor and is awarded by the President to individuals who have made meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

According to a statement from the White House, Holtz is being recognized for his accomplishments on the gridiron as well as for his contributions as a philanthropist, author, and American patriot.

Holtz, who grew up in a small town in West Virginia, was the first member of his family to enroll in college when he attended Kent State University. Holtz also served for seven years as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserves.
