Senate fails to end government shutdown

The United States Senate took a pair of votes on Thursday aimed at funding the government temporarily, with both pieces of legislation failing to reach the 60 votes needed for approval.

The first bill, which was a GOP-led bill and included funding for a border barrier failed by a 50-47 margin.

The second bill, which was backed by Democrats and did not include funding for the wall, failed by a 52-44 margin. The Democrats' bill got approval from all Senate Democrats and six Senate Republicans.

On Friday, many government employees will not receive their second paycheck in a row. The lack of pay has brought up questions of how long agencies like TSA can survive without a paid workforce.
