The US will deploy thousands of additional troops to the Middle East as tensions with Iran continue to rise following an airstrike Thursday that killed Qasem Soleimani.
According to ABC News, a U.S. official confirms that approximately 3,500 more troops from the 82nd Airborne Division will deploy to the Middle East from Fort Bragg as early as this weekend.
The official told ABC that the decision is in anticipation of possible retaliatory attack by Iran or its proxies. That official also indicated that the troops would likely join the 750 soldiers from the 82nd who were deployed to Kuwait earlier this week.
The U.S. also deployed roughly 100 Marines to the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on New Year's Eve.
