MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. -- A 24-year-old man died after crashing into a Morgan County retention pond early Saturday morning.

Morgan County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a single car crash on State Road 37 and Old State Road 37 around 12:04 a.m. Sunday.

The car reportedly crossed the median and drove into a retention pond located north of a Marathon gas station.

When deputies arrived, the car was submerged in the pond. The deputies, Jeremy Long and Jonathan Herrington, Fireman Captain Tom York and a bystander  jumped into the water to rescue the driver.

They busted class from the vehicle and removed the driver from the sunroof.

The driver, Evan Clendening, was transported to IU Methodist in critical condition where he later died.

Both deputies were transported to St. Francis-Mooresville where they were treated and released for cold exposure. York was also treated for hypothermic conditions at an area hospital.
