WASHINGTON -- An Indiana congressman has joined dozens of other members of Congress calling on President Trump to reverse his order banning transgender people from serving in the military.
Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN) was among 143 members of the House - mostly Democrats - who signed a letter calling the ban "unconstitutional" and "detrimental to our national security."
The letter compared the debate over transgender troops to the end of military segregation in 1948 and the end of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 2010.
Carson posted a copy of the letter on Twitter, saying he had proudly joined over 120 congressmen to say "#TransTroops deserve our respect and gratitude, not discrimination and a #TransBan."
The letter also mocked Trump's reasoning for the ban, comparing the money saved to the cost of Trump's weekend trips to Mar-a-Lago.“The annual cost of resultant gender transition-related medical costs would likely not exceed $8.4 million. This is less than one hundredth of one percent of the military’s nearly $50 billion health care budget. Or, for comparison, roughly equal to the cost to taxpayers of four of your weekend trips to Mar-a-Lago resort.”
Both Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly and Senator Todd Young have publicly criticized the ban.
