GARY — Northwest Indiana State Sen. Eddie Melton, D-Gary, announced his formation of a gubernatorial exploratory committee and a statewide listening tour on Tuesday.
Senator Melton is the first democrat to take the formal steps toward running for Indiana governor.
In a statement, Sen. Melton released the following:
“This announcement is not about me seeking a higher office... This is a call to refocus on inclusive policies that reflect the voice of every Hoosier, not just a select few. This is about Indiana investing in a better future for ourselves and for our children.”
Inside of the Gary Teachers Union, Sen. Melton discussed the teacher pay crisis, economic opportunities for Indiana, healthcare and needing to restore trust in the state's Department of Veterans Affairs.
Melton said he will soon announce a schedule for his statewide listening tour where he will discuss and highlight the what he thinks is inaction of state leadership and opportunities for Indiana's future.
