Pence joins Trump campaign with $7.4M in campaign war chest

INDIANAPOLIS -- Before he was the GOP's presumptive vice presidential candidate, Gov. Mike Pence was gearing up for an expensive re-election bid – meaning he'll join the Trump campaign with nearly $7.4 million in his own campaign account.

That cash on hand includes a $50,000 contribution given to the Pence campaign as recently as a week ago from the founder, CEO and spokesman for Papa John's.

Now that he's not in the governor's race, what happens next to the money is up to Pence.

He isn't required to dissolve the "Mike Pence for Indiana" campaign account. By law, he can't use the money for "primarily personal purposes," but he does have several options.

For one, he could do nothing and just leave the money where it is. He could also contribute money to the person the Indiana Republican State Central Committee chooses to replace him on the ballot.

University of Indianapolis Professor of Political Science Dr. Laura Merrifield Albright thinks that's likely.

"This is a particularly odd case, so it's difficult to say," Albright said. "But, the fact that whoever is running on the Republican side's gubernatorial ticket only has four months to the actual campaign and the election, I would say they would probably get quite a few donations from Mike Pence."

The Indiana Republican Party says it will announce its candidate for governor next week.
