State lawmaker criticized for ‘rape victim' Facebook post

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana rep. Jim Lucas was criticized Monday for his language used in a social media post regarding rape.

The Republication state lawmaker responded on Facebook to a story on rape wrote by an Indianapolis Star reporter. The post contained a photo of the letter he wrote to the reporter stating, “It would be nice to see a follow up article about the thousands of Hoosier women that are taking steps and learning how to not be a victim.”

Lucas’ post gained tons of responses, including those from advocates for rape victims that said the comment nearly blames victims for their own rapes.

The lawmaker said his comment meant to convey that women should be educated on how to protect themselves.

In January, Lucas was criticized for a Facebook post where he shared a meme of a police officer pepper-spraying a woman with the text "Participation trophies/now in liquid form!"
