INDIANAPOLIS -- For at least another year, Indiana's ban on carryout alcohol will continue.

HB 1399, the bill that would've allowed for Sunday alcohol sales, failed in a House Public Policy Committee Wednesday morning, with a vote of 8-5.

This year's proposal was different, but similar to last year. It pitted grocery and convenience stores against package liquor.

A key difference in the new proposal was that it didn't require hard liquor to be located behind the counter at grocery stores and pharmacies. The bill gaves those stores the choice of displaying alcohol in a separate area or room or in one space that isn't adjacent to items like toys or candy.

"The State of Indiana has given Hoosier owned package stores a business model through laws and regulations that we have operated under for more than 80 years," said Patrick Tamm, President and CEO of the Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers.

Rep. Tom Dermody pulled the proposal due to a lack of support last year.
