The race for Indiana's 6th District is a little crowded for the May Primary

NEW CASTLE, Ind. -- The race for Congress in the 6th District has gotten a little crowded this year after the current seat-holder, Luke Messer, announced he was running for Senate.

Six Democrats and five Republicans are still trying to sway voters who have a number of concerns.

“Chrysler’s gone, Ingersoll’s gone. There are no jobs,” said Jimmy Kidd. “The other small businesses, the restaurants, we can’t grow because we don’t have good jobs here and the money in this county to pay for those things.”

New Castle lost nearly four percent of its population between 2010 and 2016, according to the United States Census.

And people living there say the declining job market plays a major factor in that.

Laurie Davis says the next person elected needs to make that a major focus.

“They could help by trying to help promote the area for better jobs, high-paying jobs,” said Davis. “Trying to help get more money back to New Castle, more tax dollars, so that we can survive and build our community.”

Of course, jobs aren’t everything, people living in the 6th District say they’ll also be voting for candidates based on their positions on other issues like guns, the drug epidemic, social security and education.

Congressman Luke Messer currently serves the 6th District. Before him, Vice President Mike Pence held the seat for nearly a decade.

Pence’s brother, Greg, is one of the five Republican candidates hoping to sway voters next month.

The five Republican candidates include:

  • Mike Cambell
  • Jonathan Lamb
  • Stephen Mackenzie
  • Jeff Smith

The six Democratic candidates include:

  • George Holland
  • Jeannine Lee Lake
  • K. Jasen Lave
  • Jim Pruett
  • Lane Siekman
  • Joshua Williamson
