INDIANAPOLIS -- U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions paid a visit to Indianapolis on Thursday to give a pep talk to Hoosier law enforcement officers at the annual Indiana Law Enforcement Conference.
During his speech, Sessions also laid out certain priorities for the Department of Justice.
Thursday's visit was Sessions' third trip to Indiana. During his last trip, back in November, he took a walk with Ten Point Coalition's safety patrol to get a sense of what they do.
"I remember very well exploring the Ten Point Coalition who are working to reduce crime in their neighborhood," said Sessions. "People who have stepped up and taken leadership."
Sessions talked about the importance of "Project Safe Neighborhoods," an initiative to target and prioritize the most violent criminals in the most violent neighborhoods.
And he lamented the 1800 Hoosiers who died from drug overdoses last year, blaming what he called "killer fentanyl."
"Give more attention to these fentanyl cases. Even these small cases, give it attention. See if you can get the person to tell you where they got it. Let's go after them. Let's make a determined effort to reduce the supplies of fentanyl in this country."
Sessions also expressed his support for law enforcement and honored Boone County Deputy Jacob Pickett and Terre Haute Police Officer Rob Pitts, who were both killed in the line of duty this past year.
"You are the thin blue line that stands between law-abiding people and criminals - between safety and lawlessness. You protect our families, our communities and secure our country from drugs and violence. The people of this country appreciate what you do."
More than 500 law enforcement officers from Indiana attended Thursday's event.
