INDIANAPOLIS — An 8-year-old child died and three other children were seriously injured in a two vehicle crash early Friday on the south side of Indianapolis, police said.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the crash around 2:15 a.m. at the intersection of South Meridian Street and West Troy Avenue.

Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash, and the drivers of the both vehicles — a 21-year-old man in a car and a 44-year-old woman in a van with the children — were arrested.

The man faces a preliminary charge of causing death when operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and the woman was preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Police said the conditions of the children ranged from serious to critical following the crash. Medics transported the 8-year-old in critical condition to an area hospital where they later died, IMPD Officer Genae Cook said.

Two adults were in a van with the four children, while only the driver was in the second car.

Police have not provided information about what led to the crash, which remains under investigation.
