JACKSON COUNTY — A multi-vehicle crash on I-65 south claimed three lives on Wednesday morning, according to Indiana State Police.
Shortly after 10 a.m., police responded to a five-vehicle crash near the 54 mile marker in Jackson County, that shutdown the primary route between Indianapolis and Louisville.
A tractor trailer driver, Roger Wood of North Carolina, failed to slow his vehicle for the stopped traffic in the left lane, according to police.
His vehicle collided with the rear of Glenn Cardelli's RV, thus taking the lives of Cardelli, 57, and his wife, Katryn Cardelli, 57. The two are from Wisconsin.
The chain reaction pushed Cardelli's RV into the back of John Mumma's 2009 GMC Sierra. Thus pushing Mumma into the back of a freightliner hauling a box trailer. Mumma, 67, of Illinois died in the crash.
Nobody else involved in the crash was injured, according to Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.
The southbound lanes of I-65 were closed near the 54 mile marker for eleven hours for crash investigation and cleanup.
Drivers were being detoured off the highway at Exit 64 — about 10-miles north of the crash scene.
The crash remains under investigation and toxicology results are pending.
