INDIANAPOLIS—It’s officially bee week!

Which means students from across the country are in Washington, D.C. for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The Indianapolis Public Schools district has two students who made it to the major spelling event: Owen Norwalk and Aryan Sant.

Nine-year-old Aryan Sant is a fourth grade student at Sidener Gifted Academy.

He placed second in the district spelling bee and sixth in the regional bee.

Typically, in regional bee spelling competitions, only the first place winner goes to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

But, Aryan knew of a new program in which the other top students in the regional bee can apply to get in the national bee.

He did just that and made the cut.

"After the regional bee, I thought I wasn't going to the national bee, I thought that I would have a break from all the spelling, but I was also sad that I wasn't going to go. But then a month after, I got happy that I was going to go,” said Aryan.

Aryan said he studies about three hours a day.

His mom quizzes him on words and he looks at the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
