FORT WAYNE — As hospitals resume surgical procedures and patient treatments after a temporary pause in response to COVID-19, there is an urgent need for blood donations across Indiana.
The American Red Cross says blood donations are needed now to prevent another shortage from happening again.
"In recent weeks, hospital demand for blood products has grown by 30% after sharply declining in early April amid this rapidly changing and complex public health crisis," the American Red Cross stated in an announcement on Wednesday. "At the same time, blood drives continue to be canceled as many businesses and community organizations remain closed. Donors are needed to make and keep scheduled appointments to help meet the current need."
From now through May 31, blood donors can also receive a Red Cross t-shirt by mail, and those who donate between June 1 through June 30 will receive a $5 Amazon gift card via email.
"There is no known end date in this fight against coronavirus, and the Red Cross urgently needs the help of donors and blood drive hosts to ensure blood products are readily available for patients," the Red Cross' announcement read.
