SOUTH BEND — Joseph Buttigieg, a professor emeritus of English at the University of Notre Dame and the father of South Bend mayor and democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg, died on Sunday after an illness. He was 71.

His son announced his father's passing on Facebook.

"As a friend, colleague, thinker, and educator, he touched countless lives, and we hope to find a way to honor his impact later on in the spring," the mayor wrote. "Meanwhile, we are left with memories of his powerful intellect, his extensive legacy, his personal warmth and his deeply felt love for mom, me, and all those close to him.

"The last thing he said to us was, 'it's been a good trip.' So it has. We love you, Dad."

The elder Buttigieg was raised on the Mediterranean island of Malta and earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Malta, a second bachelor's degree from Heythrop College in London and his doctorate from the State University of New York at Binghamton, according to a news release from Notre Dame.

Buttigieg joined the Notre Dame faculty in 1980 and served as the director of the university's Hesburghk-Yusko Scholars Program, was a fellow in the Nanovic Institute for European Studies and Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies and served as director of the Stamps Scholars Program.

Buttigieg is survived by his wife, Anne Montgomery, a member of the Notre Dame faculty for 29 years, and his son Pete (Chasten Glezman).
