TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. -- A man was found dead in the water after police say his truck slid into a drainage area and he tried to flee the scene.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office deputies were first called to the area of Morehouse Road at Hadley lake around 1:45 a.m. Sunday for a vehicle in the water.

When they arrived, emergency responders found no indication of the driver and believed that he had fled the scene. After determining the truck's owner, crews attempted to contact family members and locate him but were unsuccessful.

Crews returned to the water when the sun came out around 5:30 a.m. for a report of a person in the water. When they arrived they located the body of Bryan Lee Johnson, 54.

Investigators believe that Johnson was involved in a slide-off collision with the drainage area and then abandoned his vehicle to try to hide from first responders. He's believed to have died from exposure and drowning and drugs and alcohol are being considered factors in the crash although a toxicology report is still pending.

The crash remains under investigation by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office.
