WILL COUNTY, Ill. — More than 2,000 preserved fetal remains were discovered on the Illinois property of a former South Bend abortion doctor who died in early September.
An attorney representing the family of Dr. Ulrich Klopfer, a former abortion doctor who had an office in South Bend, contacted the Will County, Ill. Coroner's Office to inform them they discovered what appeared to be fetal remains while going through Klopfer's personal property. The attorney requested the coroner's office provide proper removal, a release from the Will County Sheriff's Office said.
Klopfer died Sept. 3.
Authorities representing the sheriff's and coroner's offices, along with crime scene investigators, arrived at an address in unincorporated Will County and were taken to an area on the property where 2,246 medically preserved fetal remains were located, according to the release.
The sheriff's office said there is no evidence any medical procedures were conducted on the property.
WBND in South Bend reported that Klopfer was investigated in 2014 for improper record keeping involving a 13-year-old girl. His abortion clinic closed in 2016 after losing its license following an investigation that revealed the clinic did not comply with Indiana law.
