WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue student Tyler Trent has been awarded the 2018 Disney Spirit Award and a large donation toward his cancer research fund.

Trent, who is battling a rare form of cancer, gained national attention when he attended Purdue's upset win over Ohio State earlier this season.

Since then, he's been using his fame to help cancer research by raising money for the Tyler Trent Cancer Research Endowmentat Purdue University.

Trent's campaign has already topped more than $100,000.

Trent was awarded the Disney Spirit Award Thursday evening during the Home Depot College Football Awards along with a hefty donation toward his foundation.

The Anthem Foundation headquartered in Indianapolis made the first $25,000 donation. Dick and Lorraine Vitale and the V Foundation for Cancer Research will each match that donation with $25,000 gifts.

Trent also received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Gov. Eric Holcomb last month.
