Police officer in southern Indiana killed in crash during pursuit

CLARK COUNTY — A southern Indiana police officer was has died after he crashed during a police pursuit on Wednesday.

Indiana State Police say Charlestown Police Department Officer Benton Bertram, 33, tried to stop a car for a traffic violation in Clark County when the driver refused to stop.

Officer Bertram pursued the driver into Scott County before losing control and going off the road and into a tree.

Officer Bertram was pronounced dead at the scene. His K-9 companion was taken to the vet to be treated for unknown injuries.

Police found the suspected driver a short time later and he was arrested. The 35-year-old is preliminarily charged with resisting law enforcement causing death and auto theft.

Bertram was a 9-year veteran of the Charlestown Police Department.
