Apartment residents will not face eviction for missing checks

INDIANAPOLIS — Residents of an east side apartment complex can breathe easier after they learned they won't face evictions for missing rent checks.

RTV6's Graham Hunter reported last week that some people at Lexington Park Apartments were at risk of being kicked out after their rent checks went missing from a lock box.

An attorney for the apartments said employees noticed damage to the lock box, but there were still checks inside so they did not think anything of it. Management realized there was a problem after they posted eviction notices and multiple tenants approached them saying they did pay.

Eighteen residents could prove they had written a check or made out a money order, and Lexington Park will pay cancellation fees for those 18 and they will not pursue evictions.

Management is reviewing a camera on the lock box to determine who stole the checks and they are looking into a more secure set-up for dropping off checks.
