FRANKFORT — As the temperature continues to drop, firefighters are providing tips to keep people safe.

While space heaters can help keep you warm, they can quickly create a tragedy and destruction.

"Space heaters are the second leading cause of fires in the United States," Mike Henry of the Frankfort Fire Department, said.

Henry provided the following tips to make sure your space heater doesn't cause a tragedy:

  • Make sure your space heater is 3 feet away from combustibles, like walls, linens, carpets, etc.
  • You should plug your space heater in to the outlet
  • If you need to use an extension cord, you should use a heavy duty gauge extension cord
  • Make sure the space heater isn't near things that could get knocked over and lead to a dangerous situation
