INDIANAPOLIS — A stop sign always means stop. But at one intersection on the southwest side of Indianapolis, some people are turning that into an option.
The stop signs at the intersection of Southport Road and Mann Road people just aren't stopping for.
Car after car, and even cement trucks are running the stop signs (watch the video above).
In fact, RTV6 even saw a Metro police officer not stopping for the signs.
Gil Wainscott and his wife have lived in a home near the intersection for 26 years. Wainscott says the intersection has always been bad, but with more traffic now, the issues have worsened.
"When you turn, if you're not familiar with this intersection it looks like a straight shot, and you don't realize there's a road coming in from the side," Wainscott said.
Wainscott and his wife say that crashes come along with the territory and that they have contacted the city and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
RTV6 went to Metro police and asked them what was going on. They told the station that they're looking into it, and they will be focusing traffic patrols on that intersection.
Police say if you have a concern about a stretch of roadway, or an intersection, and want more patrols in your area, go to their website.
The Department of Public Works says they are putting the final touches on a nearly $900,000 improvement to the intersection that is expected to be completed in 2021.
RTV6 did ask for the total number of crashes at that intersection, IMPD said it would take a few days to pull the numbers.
