INDIANAPOLIS — A warning if you're using CBD products: you could still fail a drug test for marijuana.
That happened to an Indianapolis woman.
"I have a sciatic nerve pain in my lower back and this has been a blessing," Rose Maxey said.
Plus CBD Oil has been life changing for Maxey. She takes one 15mg capsule of Plus CBD Oil each day. It helped her to stop taking opioids for her pain.
On Monday, Maxey took a drug test for a temp job. The test was conducted on site and she said it was similar to a pregnancy test; her urine was tested instantly that day. After the test, the person who gave Maxey the test had something to tell her.
"She said THC showed up in my urine," Maxey said. "Mind me, I am 61 years old, never flunked a drug test, I don’t do drugs, I don’t even smoke cigarettes."
Maxey said her sample was thrown away and not sent out for any further testing.
Indiana law allows hemp derived products like Plus CBD Oil to have up to .3% THC, but the bottle has no warning on the label that here's THC inside.
"Nothing on it says that you can flunk a test if you take a drug test," she said.
RTV6 reached out to Plus CBD Oil and a spokeswoman says there's a label on the bottle that customers can search on the companies website for THC information. Although, Maxey bought her bottles from Fresh Thyme Market - so RTV6 stopped by to confirm the product is sold there.
"If I had known it would have blocked me from getting a job from a drug test I probably would have done something different," Maxey said.
Maxey says she reached out to Plus CBD Oil to tell them she failed the drug test. The company told Maxey to wait at least a week prior to taking the test before using the oil.
Here's what Plus CBD Oil told RTV6:
“These products do contain trace amounts of THC, although it does not cause any feelings of euphoria, it may still show up on a drug screening. This information is available on our website FAQ.”
The company's website advises people who must pass a drug test, not to take hemp derived products.
RTV6 talked to one drug test company in Indianapolis, and a spokesman said they have heard of at least one other case of CBD products causing a drug test failure.
"I don’t want them to take it off the market ,I don’t want them to stop it. But just maybe add a little bit more information to it," Maxey said.
RTV6 asked Plus CBD Oil if they plan to add any information about the possibility the product could cause people to fail drug tests, but they never answered that question.
RTV6 also reached out to Fresh Thyme Market to see if they knew the CBD products they sold contain THC, but we have not heard back from them either.
